After the Romanov dynasty fell in Russia, the concept of communism was formed. Communism is defined as a society where all property is publicly owned and everyone is paid according to their abilities and needs. Karl Marx established this idea but, V. I. Lenin was the first person to advocate for it in Russia. In 1922, Russia became the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic, also known as the USSR or the Soviet Union. It was at this time that Joseph Stalin became a supporter of the communist theory ("The Bolsheviks."). Stalin’s formal title was the first General Secretary of the Communist Party. But in fact, he was the very oppressive dictator of USSR. He ruled from 1924 to 1953. During this time, the citizens of Russia were oppressed under his rule. He enforced many different rules and also harmed and killed many different people. Joseph Stalin ruled USSR under a communist government and an oppressive dictatorship, and the Soviet Union suffered greatly under his rule (Kreis).

The Romanov Dynasty ruled the Russia for over 300 years. But in August of 1914 the Romanov Dynasty fell because the next ruler in line for the throne refused to accept his obligation as Tsar of Russia. Soon after the dynasty fell Russia was converted into the USSR. There were many opportunities for new government ideas and also government parties to gain power after the Romanov Dynasty fell ("Romanov Timeline."). One of the new concepts that arose at this time was communism. V.I. Lenin was the first leader to practice communism in the USSR. Lenin came into power towards the end of World War One. At the end of World War One, many different political parties were gaining more power. This included the Bolshevik Party, which believed in the communist ways, but was unsure of how to form a communist government ("The Bolsheviks.").
