The New Testament’s View of Divorce & Remarriage

Throughout the ages of time, the topic of divorce and remarriage has been a controversial issue around the whole world. Many experts have done in depth research on this issue. They have looked at and listened to many people’s opinions; however, the only true source that the experts could find the answers from is the Bible. Throughout the whole Bible, there are many discussions that took place and examples that are given on divorce and remarriage. The part of the Bible that has the most information on this subject is the New Testament, and the person that gave the truest answers on this topic, not just an opinion, was Jesus.

In our society today, divorce and remarriage is happening more often than ever before. Society has taken marriage, which used to be looked at as a sacred covenant between God and two people, is taking the scriptures in the Bible and changing them to fit their needs. Arne Rudvin, who is now retired, was a bishop of the Karachi diocese in the Church of Pakistan. Rudvin says, “When you first start explaining away the Bible’s very clear instruction on divorce and remarriage, it gets much easier to explain or interpret away other matters.” In the United States, there are 50 divorces per 100 marriages. Our culture, for many years now, has taken divorce to an all time high. This one statement made by Arne Rudvin is a statement that is entirely fitting to our culture today; he says, “In later years I’ve become convinced that divorce and remarriage is now the primary problem both in the Western churches and the Whole Western civilization.”

When two people are getting a divorce, according to the New Testament, they should only be divorcing because someone in that relationship has been unfaithful.
