“Leaders can be substituted, if not made obsolete, in organisations and leadership is just a concept”. Section 1: Introduction I am of the opinion that there are no prompt rules when it comes to leadership. Leadership is an art form as much as it is a skill. Every organisation and leadership opportunity may call for a standard course of action. A number of people would portray this as situational leadership. Hersey and Blanchard's situational leadership (SL) model is widely utilised but it has limited practical support. The approach they took was based on statistical analyses to investigate fundamental, predicted differences between the speech behaviours associated with the different developmental levels of people. The findings offer only partial support for the model. As predicted, an increased proportion of supervisor speech is observed in the supervision of increasingly less experienced therapists. However, the majority of the more specific speech behaviours associated with individual experience level is not in keeping with the model (Daft & Pirola-Merlo, 2009).

Leadership is a critical management skill; it is the ability to encourage a group of people toward a common goal. John Maxwell (2007) sums up his definition of leadership as leadership is influence - nothing more, nothing less. This moves beyond the position defining the leader, to looking at the ability of the leader to influence others - both those who would consider themselves followers, and those outside that circle. Indirectly, it also builds in leadership character, since without maintaining integrity and trustworthiness, the capability to influence will disappear.
