An essay which will analyse B&Q organisation was required to do. This organisation has well defined HRM procedures in place and there is an ability to gain access to different procedures. In an essay all the questions about HRM practices and procedures will be described and evaluated, relationship between employer and employer will be explained and also recruitment, selection and exit procedures within an organisation will be provided. The key issues will be investigated by sources including relevant books, journals and websites. At the end recommendations for improvement will be given.
Most of the people do understand what organisational culture is, but it is a general concept that is difficult to define and explain it correctly. The most popular and the simplest way to definition of culture was given by Deal and Kennedy (1983, p.501) ‘‘the way we do things around here’’. The culture of an organisation affects the way in which people behave and it is a contingency factor which is important for development in any organisations and HR policies and practices.
Armstrong (2009, p.384) cites the work of Eldridge and Crombie (1974), who define an organisational culture as:
“The culture of an organizations refers to the unique configuration of norms, values, beliefs and ways of behaving that characterize the manner in which groups and individuals combine to get things done.’’
The components of culture are: Values which represent believed personal and cultural values. Values can be found in different areas for example in B&Q in customer service, performance, quality, teamwork, competitiveness, care, innovation, competence and consideration for people. Norms are rules of behaviour which are unwritten and provide guideline which tells to people what they are supposed to be doing, saying, believing and wearing.
