Sport Obermeyer – Case Report

Part 1: Executive Summary

Sport Obermeyer is a leading designer and manufacturer of adult and children’s skiwear. The company was started out of a desire of my father, Klaus Obermeyer an engineer and ski instructor, to solve some of the issues that were plaguing his students. The students were cold and miserable due to not having the proper clothing needed for a day of skiing. Out of that desire and a strong sense of innovation, Sport Obermeyer now offers a “broad line of fashion ski apparel, including parkas, vests, ski suits, shells, ski pants, turtlenecks and accessories. Our products are known as not only fashionable, but highly functional and durable among skiers.

As Sport Obermeyer’s volumes have grown we have had to expand our manufacturing lead time due to constraints that we have not dealt with effectively. Part of the reason that we have issues with manufacturing lead time is that we have not had accurate forecasts to work with; we are taking major steps to deal with producing good forecasts. We must utilize the same innovation that we have shown in our products to deal with reducing our SKU’s, refining our forecasting, and working the suppliers that support Obersport to reduce lead times.

I am currently interviewing for a Supply Chain Director that both Sport Obermeyer and Obersport will report up through, so that we will have a cohesive approach from design to distribution of our products. As we make changes throughout both Sport Obermeyer and Obersport – the supply chain group will assess how the changes impact the overall supply chain.
