There are many popular sports such as baseball, basketball, and soccer but my favorites are combat sports. Since professional boxing and MMA are full of action, it makes them very exciting to watch. As a fan of these sports, I have shared opinions from both sides. Professional Boxing is an established and recognized sport around the world for many years while MMA started growing its popularity in the United States after UFC first competition in Denver, Colorado in 1993. Boxing events are allowed in almost every state but MMA is starting to be accepted.

There are some differences on the rules of boxing and MMA fights. Boxing championships matches consist of twelve rounds, of three minutes duration, with a one minute rest period between each round in contrast with MMA ones that are five rounds, of five minutes duration, with a one minute rest period between each round. The fighting area and shape of these two combat competitions vary as well. While boxing ring sizes vary generally from16' x 16' to 24' x 24', MMA cage is an octagonal structure no smaller than 18 feet by 18 feet and no larger than 32 feet by 32 feet.

Another point is the core fan group; boxing is very popular among older generations however MMA is followed more by younger generations. Boxing fans say that MMA fights are barbaric while many MMA fans argue that Boxing is boring and simple. Many boxing fans complain because a boxing card may only have one match of interest in the other hand MMA events might have three or four good matches per event.

There are some similarities and contrast on Physical conditioning and required skills. To throw fast, powerful, and effective punches are basic offensive skills for a boxer, equally important are the defensive skills and ring displacement. Similarly to boxing, MMA requires the same core skills plus elbow, kicks, grappling and ground skills.
