I took the liberty of reviewing a recent advertisement for the new Apple iPad. Apple states that this product is “resolutionary” as they are introducing a retina display and 5MP iSight camera. After reviewing the ad, I can definitely say that it does effectively communicate the product benefits from and differentiates from their competitors. Apple’s competitors consist of companies such as Samsung, Verizon, Coby and many other consumer electronics companies. Since Apple is known for their innovative creativity and product advancement, they seem to be the first company to introduce higher technology to the marketplace, which provides them with a huge competitive advantage over other companies. Apple is the number one innovator globally in the consumer electronics industry. In a recent article, CEO Tim Cook stated that his top priority remains to be product innovation. With this type of mentally, Apple will continue to lead the industry and keep their market share of consumers.

Market segmentation is the process of defining and sub-dividing the aggregate, homogeneous market into addressable, targeted needs and aspirations buckets; buckets that are in turn, held by demographic, psychographic and/or budgetary constraints. Market segmentation strategy enables a company to drive complete, unified product solutions that are harmonious with messaging, customer outreach, and channel strategies for selling and supporting customers. In this regard, Apple's product strategy is a study in market segmentation. Versus merely trying to stuff a product with as many different features as possible, they target specific user experiences, and build the product around that accordingly. From businesses to consumers, with age ranges from young to old, Apple focuses on a broad market and tends to have a “game plan” with their target market and current market segmentation.
