This article is about how team functions and ways to improve team performance. Well-structured team building and team training methods were recognized as being important in moulding efficient teams but due to the fact that every team has its own flaws, team-based organizations place such interventions in high regard for effective team performance. This article thus provides a more complete overview of the science regarding both team building and team training and future research needs. It also discusses how team development interventions are not all equal in every aspect, inclusive of actual effects on outcomes.

The definition of an effective team is achieving a specified level of team performance. Performing the actual task would be defined as taskwork, but teamwork is the depicting of team-level attitudes that changes how teams successfully complete their assignments. These are a vital part of team effectiveness and are often worked upon by team development interventions.

effective team performance are made up of various parts which may not be functioning effectively, and determining how to prevent any type of teamwork breakdown is critical, even if it is not fatal to the team.

Team development interventions follow a general skeleton of development when developed, and requires combining the tools and strategies that are embedded within the intervention, thus approaching team development interventions systematically reduces the chances of failure.

Team development intervention strategies tend to fall into one of two overarching categories, team building or team training. Team building strategies are focused on group process designed to improve social interactions and attainment of result, whereas team training is to compile and practise the knowledge and skills required for successful team performance. Although both team building and team training are made to have a positive effect on team development, they are aimed at different needs.
