GATTACA Discussion questions

The movie this week raises a number of questions about how our DNA influences who we are. While in 1997 when the movie was made, theses technologies were still in the realm of science fiction, today they are much closer to reality! For this week’s assignment , address the following questions on these issues. Submit your answers to the appropriate drop box before next week’s class.

1. What does GATTACA say about DNA determining a person’s potential? (2 points)

In the 1997 the movie Gattaca, while genetic discrimination is forbidden by law, in practice it is easy to profile a person's genotype resulting in the Valids qualifying for professional employment while the In-Valids (who are considered to be more susceptible to physical, intellectual and psychological dysfunction and under-performance) are relegated to menial jobs.

2. The technology to analyze DNA that was done in the movie is definitely possible

within the next fifty years. Do you think that Vincent’s world could eventually happen in America? Why? (2 points)

I do think this is possible because we are already so close to this. Manipulated babies are becoming more accepted because there are no flaws. Throughout the years, I believe this will become more common, possibly eventually making all manipulated babies the only population. Also, our personal information is becoming more and more publicized, just like their health records and everything were publicized. More flaws are depicted from these records, and Americans tend to be more materialistic. They will try to perfect themselves in the eyes of the world.

3. List two ways that the society portrayed in the movie reads a person’s genetic profile. (2 points)

• Door handle

• Handshake

• Saliva from application

• Finger Scanner

• Urine Sample

• Hair

4. What would you say to a friend who believed themselves to be solely a product of their DNA and with no true freedom? (2 points)

I would say that we can be...
