Meta tags are used to promote your website and increase search engine optimization. This paper will discuss how this is done. This paper will also discuss the importance of professional standards in web development.

Meta tags are HTML tags that are used to store information about web pages but are not displayed in the web browser. Meta tags are used to provide information about the page, such as a description, keywords that are relevant for searches, and what program may have been used to create the page. Many search engines use what are stored in Meta tags. Because of this, it greatly increases the chances that your website is found in a search. In my case, I would put “Davenport Tattoo Artist”, so that when someone went on-line and searched for davenport tattoo artist, my site would turn up in the results. The other benefit of sites using Meta tags would be that when you do a search it drastically cuts down on the random websites that would pop-up.

The important of web standards is profound. The web is growing and changing minute by minute, and without standards it would be chaos. People and companies chose to use a variety of web browsers, and with no standards you would need to have multiple browsers because some sites simply would not function correctly in all browsers. Browser companies actually took it a step further by using tools that would allow only certain types of web sites to function correctly with their browsers. Standards were needed, and implied by the W3C. Now the W3C has specific rules in place for each new technology to make most website (those that comply) work universally through all up to date browsers, and even retroactive to many old ones.

A benefit to the web designer is that now builders and designers do not need to write code for each web browser. They can use XHTML, CSS, HTML5, and so on to achieve universal acceptance. This helps to cut down on maintenance. This also makes the...
