Chemistry of Computers

Arguably, the most important part of human communication and daily process is in some way related to a computer. With arrival of the age of technology, computers are almost a necessity in every home. Nowadays, over 79% of citizens in the United States own a personal computer at home. People use computers everyday to perform such task like email, shopping, banking online, talking to friends through instant messaging or social networks, and even buying groceries. Technology is constantly developing, creating shortcuts for those who have access to the Internet. The Computer overall is an extremely useful tool, it is an excellent aid for scientists, doctors, developers, architects and engineers, providing reference for them and enabling them to work faster, completing tasks that without the help of a computer could take weeks, months or even years. The Computer has also provided jobs for many people such as developers or PC repair services.

The chemistry used in computers can be seen in a process called semiconductor manufacturing. They are an integral part in the manufacturing of microchips and wafers, which allows computers to talk us. Semiconductor manufacturing consists of the following four-part process. First, production of silicon wafers from very pure silicon ingots. Next, fabrication of integrated circuits onto wafers. Then, assembly of every integrated circuit on the wafer into a finished product, and finally, testing and back-end processing of the finished products.

Wafer fabrication generally refers to the process of building integrated circuits on silicon wafers.  Prior to wafer fabrication, the raw silicon wafers were to be used for this purpose are

first produced from very pure silicon ingots, through either the Czochralski or the Float Zone method. The ingots are shaped and sliced into thin wafers through a process called wafering. This is where chemistry becomes essential to the making of computers....
