With a social media resume, I will be able to paint a completely different portrait of myself for hiring managers and customize it to reflect my personal brand. With the inclusion of various multimedia elements, sharing options, integrated social networking feeds and the same elements I put in a traditional resume, I am better equipped for success. Social media has allowed me to reverse the recruiting process. Instead of submitting my resume, it becomes a billboard that can be shared, distributed to hiring managers, searched and more. In one sense it showcases my talents and what I am looking for in a job and in the other, recruiters become attracted to it and will approach me with the opportunities that I desire. Depending on what I want, how much time it will take, I will start a website or a blog. With both, there is free and easy to use services out there, as well as services that cost money and require experience. Depending on what strategy I use, a URL is extremely important. I would purchase a domain name, heidiharden.com. If that isn’t available, I would try for heidihardenRESUME.com or the .net or .org equivalents, in that order. The objective of the URL is to have something I can freely promote and that people can remember. I can use the URL on my paper resume and on all of my social networks.

I can get free domain names when I sign up for Bluehost, Godaddy and others. They typically come in a package with the hosting space. Before I think of even linking to any of my social networks in my webpage or blog, I need to consider how the profiles will appear to recruiters. For instance, if I want to highlight my Facebook profile, I will ensure that it doesn’t have profanity or explicit pictures on it first.
