Jignasa Patel Arabian Nights reaction paper March 2, 2009 Arabian Nights Arabian Nights is the second play I have seen in my life. The first play I saw was Beauty and the Beast about a year ago at the Shawnee Mission Park. Compared to Beauty and the Beast, Arabian Nights was not as well casted and enjoyable. Beauty and the Beast had a really good use of spectacle while Arabian Nights only had single scenery throughout the play. I heard some comments about the play prior seeing it. Those comments from other students helped make an image in my head about the play. I expected more from the play than what I saw. I went to go see the play on a Saturday afternoon with my five cousins. I was sick at the time with pneumonia, but I felt completely fine that afternoon. We were very excited to see the play. When we entered the lobby to buy tickets, it felt very much like a movie theater. Before, I thought it might be a little different than a movie theater. When I got in, I was surprised to see how close the stage was to the audience. I really liked the triangular shape of the stage; this made the audience more involved with the play. I loved the lights on and around the stage. The ability to move the lights up and down throughout the play was fantastic; and the different color of the lamps made them more inspiring. I think the director did an excellent job at the beginning of the play by having all the actors setting up the stage with music. I really enjoyed the music, Arabian looks, and the rich outfit colors at the beginning. The carpets and the different shaped pillows made it look like story telling setting .These things made a strong effect on getting peoples’ attention and letting them know that something exciting is going to start. The other play that I saw already had the stage set up prior to the play. I think if the director made some type of background instead of the wall, it would have been more effective.
