Give definitions and uses for the following tests of the male reproductive system:

Digital rectal examination Is an examination of the lower rectum that is used to examine the prostate looking for abnormal enlargement or other signs of prostate cancer.

DNA analysis A technique to assist in the identification of individuals by their respective DNA profile and can be used in a crime scene to determine who did the crime or if they raped someone, it can even prove paternity (that a [particular man is the father of the child being tested).

Hormone testing Determine the levels of FSA and LH from the anterior pituitary gland and testosterone from the testes. It is used to diagnose infertility problems.

Prostate-specific antigen A protein produced by the cause of the prostate gland. It is done to screen for prostate cancer and also to monitor patients after prostate cancer treatment.

Semen analysis Is a microscopic examination of the spermatozoa. A semen analysis is done as part of a workup for infertility. A semen analysis is also done after a vasectomy to verify aspermia and a successful sterilization.

Amniocentesis Test of the amniotic fluid. Using ultrasound guidance, a needle is inserted through the abdomen and into the uterus to obtain amniotic fluid. This is done between 15 and 18 weeks’ gestation. The following tests are performed.

1. Chromosome studies of fetal skin cells can determine the sex of the fetus and identify genetic abnormalities such as Down syndrome.

2. Alpha fetoprotein (AFP). An increased level indicates a neural tube defect (myelomeningocele).
