Biotechnology in Sewage Treatment

1. What specific biotechnology application did you choose?

I have chosen the use of bacteria as a biotechnology application in order to clean sewage and to remove contaminants from the sewage. Sewage is more known as waste water.

2. Briefly describe this biotechnology application. How is it done?

Bacteria have carried out this important task of cleaning waste water in the nature over millions of years. Today bacteria play an important role as a biotechnology application in order to clean the waste water in the sewage cleaning process .The good bacteria needs to be identified and put to work for its specific purpose in order to consume the waste, fight bad bacteria and then expel clean and/or cleaner water. The treated water can then be subject to other non-biotechnical processes in order to make it reusable. Not all bacteria contribute positively in sewage cleaning process and the effect is rather opposite and they must be eliminated in the cleaning process.

3. Based upon the definition of biotechnology in the assignment, describe how your biotechnology application is an example of biotechnology.

“Biotechnology is the use of or changing of living organisms to make or modify products or processes

Bacteria are living organisms which are used in the cleaning process of sewage. The infusion of good bacteria can accelerate and control the natural cleaning process of sewage in order to make clean water. Bacteria can also facilitate the cleaning process in order to prepare the waste water for the next level of treatment which can be a mechanical and/or chemical process.

4. What benefits are derived from this application?

Clean water is a critical natural resource for all living organisms and this resource is a scarcity in many countries around the world. This application has made it possible to increase the global supply of clean water faster and keep...
