Decision to Pursue an MBA
Pursuing an MBA (Masters of Business Administration) should be a decision that no one should take lightly. The decision should be made with careful planning and extreme self discipline. The first questions that I asked myself is, why do I want an MBA, second financially am I prepared to purse this graduate degree, and third what effect will it have on my career? Before I made my decision I had to do some research of my own to became well versed in the education I was about to pursue. Currently working as an Engineer and comparing my options of switching paths with in the same company required me take a strategic investigation on the types of MBA, cost and return of an MBA, and an MBA school.
There are many MBA programs out there such as accounting finance, human resources, marketing, management, healthcare and many more. The two I found attractive were management and finance. A concentration in finance would allow more doors to be open within my current company of a defense contractor. As finance major I would fit in positions for contract writing, budget and cost using our EVMS (Earn Value Management System) tools, or becoming a sector accountant. An MBA in management and consulting would easily give me the opportunity of becoming a second or third level manager and possibly move into a Director position. With my experience I would have the opportunity to manage engineers, maintain schedules and cost push toward project millstones, lead others based experience and communication techniques that I will learn through an MBA background. For example having a healthcare concentration prepares people who are interested in Pharmaceuticals, or health services. People who have marketing concentrations will focus on advertisement, competitor products, and some forms of entrepreneurship. It’s was really important for me to be selective toward...
