List and describe the security controls in place. Where are the weaknesses?

The security control in which TXJ was using is called Wired Equivalent Privacy or (WEP) encryption system. A wired equivalent privacy or (WAP) is a security protocol, utilized by (WLAN) or wireless local area network that is suppose to have as much security as a (LAN) OR wired local area network. The outdated version that TXJ was using was easily cracked by hackers. One area of weakness was the inadequate security through the kiosks which was used for people to apply for jobs electronically on location of many of their stores. These kiosks were directly linked to the company’s corporate network, which were then compromised.

What tools and technologies could have been used to fix the weaknesses?

There is a more secure WI-FI security system TJX could have used called (WPA) Wi-Fi Protected Access used most of the time for many complex encryption. The major flaws that TJX had with their system was lead to this problem was that they neglected to follow the simple protocols of installing a proper antivirus, utilizing system passwords, never installing firewalls, and lack of data encryption on most of the computers using the wireless network. Having used these basic tools could have prevented and fixed most of the weaknesses on their system.

What was the business effect of TXJ’s data loss on TXJ, consumers, and banks?

The banks suffered the biggest lose due to TJX’s data loss, even more so then the retailers. TJX and the credit card companies were estimated to have to pay upwards of $300 million in order to recover stolen identities as well as cover the losses of fraudulent purchases. TJX was being sued for $1 billion in losses over a five year span and also for not protecting the customer’s information that used their services.
