Part I

Define the following terms:

Term Definition

Discrimination The denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups

because of prejudice or for other arbitrary reasons.

Institutional discrimination A denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals or groups, resulting from the normal operations of a society.

Political correctness

The belief in not using language or other practices that could offend any subordinate group. (Race, sex, etc.)

Part II

Write a 150- to 250-word response to each of the following questions:

• How is discrimination different from prejudice and stereotyping?

Discrimination is different because you are actually denying someone opportunities or equal rights based on prejudice or other personal opinions. Prejudice is a negative attitude toward an entire group, they are not actually denying them of opportunities of equal rights, they are forming an opinion and having a negative thought process and attitude towards the group. Stereotyping is assuming an entire group is the same as one individual from that group. It is an assumption about an entire group without taking consideration of individual differences. So basically they are different because of their meanings but can all go together or be the cause and effect. For example someone could stereotype that all Middle Easterners are terrorists, they become prejudice against Middle Easterners because of this stereotype and decide they do not like all Middle Easterners, they then decide to discriminate against them by not letting them on airplanes or denying them of job opportunities.

• What are the causes of discrimination?

There are several causes of discrimination. Ignorance, stereo typing, prejudice and other negative experiences an individual may go through to make them discriminate. I think that stereotyping is the beginning of discrimination. When you assume that...
