One of the most popular items in the world is cell phones. They have become very popular over the last two decades with new features and interesting additions. Text messaging is one of these additions, they are very useful when in a business setting and you are not able to talk, but they are also convenient when you don’t really want to talk. Texting was a good idea until recent studies showed that more harm has come out of the ordeal than good. How is texting putting a negative spin on society? It has slowly dwindled into our every day lives which is fine until you bring it to the road. Texting while driving is one of the major killers in America now-a-days and its stated to be more popular among teens than adults but now both age groups are adapting to this new way of technology and feeling as though they can multitask.

Texting while driving affects pedestrians as much as it does the drivers and passengers of the car. Texting causes one million six hundred thousand accidents per year and is the number one distractions amongst teenagers in America. It is also six times more likely to cause an accident when texting than it is when you are intoxicated. The risk of driving while texting could lead to serious injuries and more commonly death. The rates of car accidents because of texting are going up each year states "Edgar Snyder & Associates at the law firm representing injured people" they have had more cases in 2011 than any year before. The law firm also states more than sixty percent of their cases dealt with car accidents due to some type of cell phone usage.

Texting and driving is a visual distraction, a physical distraction, and a cognitive distraction. When texting while driving, a driver is visually distracted because they must focus on something other than the road ahead and other road surroundings.
