1. Who were the defendants and what contacts did each have with California?

Calder v. Jones, 465 U.S. 783 (1984). Calder is a publishing company for the National Enquirer. The National Enquirer is located in Florida. The National Enquirer published information regarding the petitioner (Shirley Jones). By having employees located in California and the company established contacts which retrieved the information to be published this as established a contact within the state of California. The Petitioner, Shirley Jones, is a resident of the state of California which has established her contact regarding this case.

2. Were the defendants subject to suite in California? Why or why not?

Yes, the defendants were subjected to a lawsuit in the state of California. The defendants, The National Enquirer, are subjected to a law suite because the article was written about the petitioner, Shirley Jones. The company, The National Enquirer, had contacts located within California whom sent the National Enquirer information regarding the petitioner, Shirley Jones. The paper was published to hundreds of thousands of customer’s nation wide, with California being the second highest customer in the nation. The National Enquirer intended to cause harm to the respondent by publishing information that would/could end the entertainers’ career. Since California is the focal point of this law suit, the Supreme Courts finding reflect an affirmative (they believe there is a right to sue the National Enquirer) in regards to the lawsuit. The court upheld jurisdiction over the defendants in California because of their intentional conduct in Florida which resulted in a calculated cause of injury to the petitioner, Shirley Jones.
