Diabetes, the Silent Killer

I. Introduction

Diabetes is a disease that anyone can get no matter what age a person is. Diabetes is a disease where the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Diabetes can be life threatening if left untreated. There are three major types of diabetes: Type I, Type II, and Gestational diabetes.

II. What is diabetes?

A. Definition – Diabetes is a chronic disease.

It is not a contagious disease.

It affects the way the body uses blood sugar, which is the body’s main source of fuel and energy.

B. Symptoms – May be a slow start of symptoms or none at all.

Symptoms include tingling/numbness in hands or feet, recurring skin, mouth, or bladder infections, frequent urination, thirst and/or appetite, problems with sexual functions, blurred vision, slow to heal sores or cuts, tiredness, and dry itchy skin

III. Types of Diabetes

A. Type I – Your body makes no insulin.

B. Type II – Your body doesn’t make enough insulin or doesn’t use it properly.

C. Gestational diabetes – Diabetes is diagnosed during pregnancy.

IV. Complications of Diabetes

A. Cardiovascular disease

.People with diabetes is at least twice more likely to have a heart attack or stroke.

B. Eye disease

.Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in adults ages 25-74.

C. Amputations

. Diabetes is the most common cause of amputations not caused by injury.

D. Kidney disease

. 1 out of 10 people develop kidney disease.

V. Causes and Risk Factors

A. Causes

. No one knows the exact cause.

Risk factors – Some people have a higher risk of getting diabetes.

. Risk factors include being older than 40 years of age, smoking, being overweight, family history of diabetes ,having diabetes during pregnancy, stress, high blood pressure, African American, Hispanic American, and Native American Heritage....
