My Life in Diversity

At some point in my life, I looked around and thought to myself, how different people around me looked, dressed, acted, and even talk. Those feelings and thoughts I had can be attributed to the differences in culture, religious beliefs, language, and race. Most people today judge others based on these characteristics. Diversity is one of the key things that make up a big part of our world today from the workplace, clients, customers we serve, military, and our neighbors. Diversity is a very complicated topic with many components.

Defining what Diversity is has become a major stumbling block in any discussion. So in order to understand the impact of diversity in the workplace, where I lived, and grew up, let’s define what diversity and culture is according to Webster’s Dictionary. Diversity is defined as the condition of having or being composed of differing elements: variety; especially the inclusion of different types of people (as people of different races or cultures) in a group or organization.

The United States Marines in which I work consists of troops from many diverse cultures. To be a US Citizen is not a requirement to join the Marines, so people enlist from across the United States as well as various countries around the globe. The Marines has its own unique culture that is a conglomeration of the many cultures that make up its population. Each new Marine is expected to adapt to this new culture and integrate as a member of a larger team. Helping new Marines make this adaptation as quickly as possible and with few difficulties is a challenge for the leaders of new marines throughout the Marine Corps.
