There is only one thing in life that is really needed and that is friends. Without friends, people would become depressed and suffer from loneliness. In the novel, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, the characters of Crooks, Candy and Curly’s Wife are all different forms of loneliness. Throughout this novel, Of Mice of men, Steinbeck shows several ways that a victim of isolation will have a never ending search to have a good friendship. The novel, which takes place during the Great Depression, begins beside the Salinity River near Soledad, where two migrant workers. Lennie and George are walking on ther e way to a nearby ranch.They had recently escaped from a farm near Weed where Lennie, was wrongly accused of rape when he touched a woman to feel her dress. George not to speak when they arrive at the bunkhouse. When Lennie complains about not having red sauce on his beans for dinner, George becomes angry, telling Lennie that he would be better off if he didn’t have to travel with his mentally challenged friend. George tells Lennie his dreams for them, if they raise enough money to buy a patch of land, where they will have a small farm with a vegetable patch and a rabbit hutch. Lennie gets excited about the rabbit hutch that is the only part of George’s dream he actually remembers. George tells Lennie that, if he gets into trouble as he did in Weed, he should return to the brush near the river and wait for George to find him. When they arrive at the bunkhouse at the farm where they will work, and old man called Candy shows them their beds and tells them that the boss was angry that they didn’t show up the night before. The boss questions the boys and finds them suspicious because George keeps answering for Lennie. The boss can’t understand why George would travel with Lennie, until he explains that Lennie is his cousin. After the boss leaves, his son Curly enters looking for the boss. Curly’s wife visits the bunkhouse later looking for Curly, and flirts with all...
