ABBREVATION LIST

1. Autonomation : Transferring human intelligence to automated machinery so machines are able to detect the production of a single defective part and immediately stop themselves while asking for help. This concept, also known as jidoka

3. Cycle time: The time that elapses from the beginning of a process or operation until its completion.

4. DFMA : Design for Manufacture and Assembly

5. 5S : A checklist for good housekeeping to achieve greater order, efficiency and discipline in the workplace. It is derived from the Japanese words seiri, seiton, seiso, seiketsu and shitsuke and adapted to the English equivalents of sort, straighten, scrub, systemise and standardise. In some companies it is adopted as the 5Cs campaign

6. FMEA : Failure Mode Effect Analysis

7. Hoshin planning : A strategic decision-making tool for a firm’s executive team that focuses resources on the critical initiatives necessary to accomplish the business objectives of the firm. Hoshin kanri unifies and aligns resources and establishes clearly measurable targets against which progress towards the key objectives is measured on a regular basis.

8. Kaizen : The philosophy of continual improvement, that every process can and should be continually evaluated and improved in terms of time required, resources used, resultant quality, and other aspects relevant to the process.
