In Togo about 40% of the population lives in urban areas, which leaves the other 60% of the population to live in the rural areas of the country. The housing is fairly poor in the rural areas with most of the houses being made of mud and sometimes housing up to 3 families within them. These mud houses are usually concentrated into villages. The people mostly own their own homes, but there is the possibility of renting home in the more urban areas of Togo. The houses do not generally have just one family living in it. Some of the housing has multiple families living together under one roof (See picture 1). The people of Togo are very poor for the most part especially those living in the rural areas of the country. The standard of living is very high because of the pretty weak economy of the country not being able to support its countrymen. The many major diseases in Togo like malaria, AIDS, and polio affect the Togolese very badly. Doctor visits are not cheap and may sometimes be way too expensive to afford. Due to this the Togolese increase their chance of death by illness and can affect the economy by not having the human resources to keep the economy going. There are mostly poor people living in Togo with just a few rich and a small middle-class. Poverty is pretty severe with 32.3% of its population, as of 2004, living in poverty. The class structure is poor class, lower middle class, higher middle class, and the rich class at the top. The country is going to have to pull together to make this country function correctly. The poor need to be helped so that they can play a bigger role in the economy of Togo. If this is done Togo can become a more developed country.
