Technology has transformed the work-force and lives tremendously throughout the years. Even more so in the health care field. Though not introduced to every organization yet, Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) are transforming record keeping and communication in health care. Electronic Medical Records are patients’ charts and histories are documented electronically and have available access throughout different facilities.

With this advancement in health care, both health care providers and patients benefit. For the patient, benefits are most definitely noticeable. Patients gain access the access to their records which provides them with the portability and knowledge of their history they need. Having the convenience to view their own personal records, patients can ensure the accuracy of their information. Portability is possible which allows a patient to have or visit more than one health care provider and have the convenience of not waiting or relying on another provider to transfer their charts. In reality, these benefits to the patient also benefit the organizations and physicians which they are seen by. This provides the professional side with more efficient patient information. Electronic Medical Records reduce clerical errors with the support and attention of both the patients and health care providers.

It is crucial to maintain patient confidentiality when using Electronic Medical Records, just as it is for any other form of communication which is implemented. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, otherwise known as HIPAA, provide health care providers with regulations and stringent laws which help to ensure this is possible.
