Proposal for determining the timeliness of the downtown bound 1 local line
REASONING:
The subway system is an integral component of our daily lives and subway trains serve as an effective form of mass transit and provide an alternative to private and public above-ground street transportation. For most people subways are a rapid, cheaper and convenient way to get to their respective destinations therefore minimizing the total commute time is desirable. The goal of this project is to determine whether the subway system adheres to its daily schedule for a specified train line.
ACTIVITY:
For 14 days between 8am and 9am and between 3pm and 4pm, we will record the arrival times of downtown 1 subway at 116th street. We will record the exact time to the nearest second in which the subway doors fully open.
BACKGROUND:
The subway station at 116th street has both the uptown and downtown 1 local line. For the purposes of the current study, the focus is on the number 1 downtown bound local line. The difference between the scheduled arrival time and the actual arrival time will be noted during two different periods of the day over a course of 14 days. These observation points will be instrumental in determining whether the number 1 line has consistent deviations from its stated schedule. A control chart will be utilized to aid us in this process.
