Personality Analysis

Carl Jung believed that personality provided the best understanding of the intrinsic or natural characteristics of human beings. Furthermore, he defined personality as “An act of high courage flung in the face of life, the absolute affirmation of all that constitutes the individual, the most successful adaptation to the universal conditions of existence coupled with the greatest possible freedom for self-determination” (King, 2011, p. 1). Gordon Allport believed personality is the uniqueness of an individual (Feist, & Feist, 2009). Personality provides insight into the distinctive qualities of an individual’s thought processes, emotions, and behaviors. Allport’s dispositional theory adhered to the belief that although people display similar traits differences exists because of individuality.

Several theorists have analyzed the development of personality; moreover; each theory has its own understanding. Therefore; examining different theoretical approaches of personality will provide more insight into how human personality develops. Albert Bandura’s social cognitive theory also focuses on the individual person, and his or her uniqueness. His belief was one’s reaction in anticipation of an event or meeting is more dominant than the expected event. Moreover, Bandura also believed that internal and external factors controlled behavior, and learning for humans is flexible and occurs through observation (Feist & Feist, 2009). The following paragraphs will use dispositional and learning theories to describe how personality affects situational behavior, examine the characteristics of personality, and explain the interpersonal relational aspects associated with each theory.
