The Notebook

“The Notebook” (2004), a romance movie directed by Nick Cassavetes. The movie was based on the book The Notebook written by Nicholas Sparks in 1996. The book was a best seller for that entire year, according to nicholassparks.com. In 1997, Nick Cassavetes was awarded with a Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival by his film “She’s So Lovely”. In 2004, he received the award “Daytime Emmy” by Daytime Emmy Awards by his film “The Incredible Mrs. Ritchie.” The starring actors in “The Notebook” are Ryan Gosling (younger Noah), Rachel McAdams (younger Allie), James Garner (older Noah) and Gena Rowland (older Allie), according to the website www.imdb.com. Ryan Gosling in 2008 was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Performance in his film “Lars and the Real Girl” (2007). Rachel McAdams in 2006 was nominated for Best Actress in the film “Red Eye” (2005). James Garner and Gena Rowland throughout their acting careers have been dominated and received several Emmy Awards, Golden Globes, and Oscars.

The movie is about a couple, Noah Calhoun and Allie Nelson. They fall in love in their early adulthood, got married, and die on the same night. They are now about 70 years old. Allie suffers from Alzheimer’s and does not remember anything from her past. Noah reads to Allie every day wishing that one day she will remember the story of their life. And it did happen. Allie realizes that it is their story what she had been listening to. The film goes back and forth between Noah’s readings and actual showing of the scenes.

The movie starts when Noah is reading to Allie from a notebook, what seems to be his personal diary. Noah and Allie met at a carnival. Noah felt attracted to Allie immediately after seeing her. They had nothing in common. Noah was a mine worker. Allie was a girl who came from a wealthy family that wishes Allie to marry a man of their same economic status.
