There are many reasons for me to get a college degree. The main reasons are to first help my family to
live a comfortable life style, second to help others in my community and lastly for the enhancement of
my knowledge. My learning style according to Marcia L. Conner which is one of three is Visual. In my
own personal essay from GEM study I am a People Oriented Achiever and A Team Facilitator.
There are many families that live from pay check to pay check I have never wanted to join there ranks.
I know that in attaining a college degree I will have many more doors of opportunity open to me for a
job that I will enjoy and contribute to mine and my family’s future. According to the U.S. Census Bureau
they have written about the, “Value of a college education in the United States.” “Workers 18 and over
sporting a bachelor’s degrees earn an average of $51,206 a Year, while those with a high school diploma
earn $27,915.”
In helping others in my community there are many reasons why I or anyone else would want to do this,
Alwyn Loh ‘09 Writes, “Community service isn’t about padding one’s resume… But it is the dawning
realization of to the greater understanding our humanity, our fragility and a greater appreciation of the
great lives that so many of us lead… .” My very own thought process is those very words that Alwyn Loh
09 writes about. We tend to lose touch of, “our humanity, our fragility” and forget to take care of one
another.
