UNIT 03
1.1 Identify different occupational contexts where counselling skills are used
Counselling skills are used in a variety of contexts or different occupational sectors. The main contexts fall into a number of categories:-
* Health
* Primary care – GP setting
* Secondary care – Hospital setting
* Education
* Schools – all levels but predominantly secondary
* Further Education - Colleges
* Higher Education – Universities
* Voluntary
This occupational context includes any not for profit organisations that are may be funded via local government but are predominantly dependent of donations, fund-raising activities and where applicable and appropriate payment from clients. The majority of referral agencies fall into this category for example drug Services, alcohol services, bereavement services.
* Workplace
This occupational context could be commercial, industrial, Government body (i.e. Social Services) and divides into two fundamental areas;
* Embedded in one company/organisation
* Employee assistance offered to several companies
* Independent/Freelance
* Individuals based at home or office (probably rented)
* Pastoral
* Agency Work
1.2 Outline different roles within which counselling skills may be of use
There are numerous different roles within the occupational contexts listed above, that may utilise one or a combination of the many counselling skills. Examples for each context are outlined below:-
* Health
* Consultants, Doctors, nurses (ward, theatre, and practise) receptionists, in-house pharmacists, care assistants, speech therapists, dentists, physiotherapists, radiographers.
* Education
* Lecturers, teachers, teaching assistants, school nurses, pastoral, mentors, dinner ladies, educational psychologists, SENKO’s.
* Voluntary
