Nature vs. Nurture

Introduction

Nature vs. Nuture has been a big question for psychologists for many years. Is it hereditary the way that we think and behave or is it nature from the environment that we were raised in? I personally think that behavior is determined by both. The genetic aspect makes up who we are destined to be, but the environment that we are raised in make us who we are. Even though the human race is made the same biologically, the culture and the customs that it carries have an effect on our behavior and our thinking. “The shared ideas and behaviors which one generation passes on to the next – matters. Our culture shapes our behavior” [ (Myers, p. 39) ]. There was a study conducted on a set of twins that were separated without one another’s knowledge for 38 years. They were identical and completely similar down to the name of their dogs even though they never knew one another existed. There have been other studies on twins separated at birth and their traits, habits, and lives were similar. So, is it genetic or is it environment that shapes us who we are? Gender seems to play a large role in the debate both genetically and environmentally. Parents raise their boys differently and have different expectations of them than they do of girls. This is a major debate that will most likely have no end.
