Discuss the impact of project termination to community livelihood

A project may be canceled or terminated for a variety of reasons, including lack of funding, technological obsolescence, changes in consumer trends, mergers and acquisitions, loss of the "champion," and negative cost/benefit relationships.

Both positive and negative effects include:

a. Changes within Microfinance

Within the microfinance sector, there is need to improve targeting towards poorer rural people – in response to findings that, contrary to intentions, some projects have disproportionately benefited relatively secure households. Effectively targeting the most vulnerable households will entail strengthening the outreach capabilities of institutions involved in the provision of microfinance services.

b. Agricultural production and marketing

Case studies demonstrate the potential benefit of forming agricultural production and marketing associations as a means of enhancing livelihood security in poor rural communities. Programs must enable demand-driven approaches to community development by strengthening linkages with private-sector markets and strengthening community capacity to support off-farm, agriculture-based enterprises such as post-production processing.

c. Infrastructure

A number of institutional and technical factors influence the sustainability of infrastructure development projects. In order to improve this sustainability, donors must avoid the temptation to focus solely on the achievement of physical and financial targets. This has too often led to a failure to promote community ownership and to the premature granting of responsibility for infrastructure maintenance to government partners.
