Exxon Mobil Corporation Company History

The Exxon Mobil Corporation is one of the largest integrated gas and oil companies in the United States and the world as a whole. Exxon Mobil has many aspects of their business such as the marketing of gas and oil, production and refining. One key fact that many people may overlook or simply may not know is that in addition to being a petroleum and chemical company, Exxon Mobile also uses innovation and science to become a large technology company as well.

Exxon Mobil is a product of Standard Oil Company, but as a result of the merger between Mobil and Exxon on November 30, 1999, Exxon Mobile was born.

Other Historical Facts

As of today, Exxon Mobil is listed as number four in Forbes Magazine at one of the Global 2000 Leading Companies. Currently, the CEO is Rex Tillerson. “The Company has several divisions and hundreds of affiliates with names that include ExxonMobil, Exxon, Esso or Mobil. Divisions and affiliated companies of ExxonMobil operate or market products in the United States and other countries of the world.”(www.forbes.com, 2011) Exxon Mobil is proven to be listed as number one in market value, number two in profit, number three in sales and as far as assets are concerned, Exxon Mobil is way down the list as number eighty-three. Exxon Mobile has also had many oil spills. The most publicized and criticized being the Exxon Valdez on March 24, 1989. Over eleven million gallons of oil was spilled into the Prince William Sound, and because of the slow response to clean up the spill, the company was sued and was required to pay five billion dollars in punitive damages but the amount was appealed through the United States Supreme Court and the amount ordered for payout was significantly reduced to five hundred million dollars.
