Term Definition

Diversity

The incorporation of different people of various race, religion, or cultures in an organization or group (Schaefer, 2012).

Ethnocentrism

The belief or assumption that one’s race, culture, or way of life is better or superior to all others (Schaefer, 2012).

Melting pot

Groups consisting of different races, ethnicities, or both coming together and forming a new cultural entity. (Schaefer, 2012)

Minority group

A group of people that have far less power or control over their lives than those in the larger more dominate groups (Schaefer, 2012.).

Emigration

Moving from one country to settle in another (Schaefer, 2012).

Immigration

Becoming a permanent resident in a new country (Schaefer, 2012).

Culture

The beliefs, traits, patterns, and social behaviors that identify members of a certain ethnic, racial, or social group (Schaefer, 2012).

1. What are some of the ways groups of people are identified?

Different ways the groups of people are identified are by gender, race, ethnicity, and religion. When we are identified by race it is because of our obvious physical characteristics, and we define people first by what is obvious and in the United States there are many different skin colors. When people are grouped by ethnicity they are grouped by their cultural differences like language, marital practices, or family structure and beliefs, ethnic groups are set apart for cultural patterns and nationality, their cultural patterns normally originate in their homeland and when they reside in a new country they continue their cultural practices. In gender groups there are only two sides male and female, males make up the social majority and women are to social minority even though they do not necessarily have all of the five characteristics that define a minority “unequal treatment,...
