PSYCHOLOGY:

1. DEFINITION OF PSYCHOLOGY:

Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour and experience, carried out in a manner which will enable us both to draw out general principals, and to achieve the understanding of the unique nature and quality of an individual’s personal experience as a human being.

2. CATEGORIES OF PSYCHOLOGISTS:

a)Clinical Psychologists:

trained to diagnose and treat many problems ranging from low self-esteem or trouble adjusting to a new life or more severe disturbances such as sexual assaut.

b)Counselling Psychologists:

trained to offer therapeutic help practical guidance to people who have problems in life but who are relatively free of serious mental disturbances.

c)Educational Psychologists:

specialise in applying psychological knowledge in the educational setting, especially in schools. They are trained to identify and correct learning disabilities and educational underachievement.

d)Industrial Psychologists:

study of human behaviour in the work situation. they are trained to work in organisations. Their work also includes the selection, placement, and training of personnel.

e)Research Psychologists:

specialised training in the planning and conducting of research projects and the analysis and interpretation of research results.

f)Psychotechnicians and Psychometrists:

these are two additional registration categories for people who are not psychologists but who have specialised training in the administration and scoring of psychological tests.

g)Health Psychology:

is the application of psychological principals to the promotion of physical health and the prevention and treatment of disease.

h)Community Psychology:

identify the needs and problems of deprived communities and adapting existing techniques, methods and principles to different cultural groups. They also develop new and appropriate strategies of intervention. They train community workers to spread psychological skills to a wider number of people....
