Diversity in Organizations

Diversity is dissimilarities-differences- among people due to age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic background, education, experience, physical appearance, capabilities/disabilities, and any other characteristic that is used to distinguish between people. (Jones & George, pg 149) Diversity stands well in any organization and should be viewed as a vital part of operation.

In order for an organization to be successful, there should be an understanding of the different cultures, ethnicity, religions, age and gender. Individuals are from different background so with an open mind and heart, we are able to communicate and function efficiently.

It’s all about taking the time out to learn or have understanding of another culture, breaking down each personality into layers of dimensions, their internal dimensions, external dimensions and their organization dimensions. Understanding the internal dimensions gives an insight of on age, sexual orientation, gender, physical ability, race and ethnicity, which are all things we cannot control but the influence our attitudes and expectation about others (Kinicki & Kreitner). The external dimension relates to geographic location, personal habits, marital status, income, personal status, recreational habits, educational background, appearance, work experience, religion and parental status which a are things we can control. We then have the organization dimension such as seniority, job title and function and work location. (Kinicki & Kreitner). Employees are able to work to their fullest potential when diversity is managed effectively.

Some methods and procedures for analyzing diversity would be where management will involve the input of other employees and not just those from top management. Give the necessary recognition where applicable and let employees feel appreciated. In order to...
