At the United States Federal Court System we are combating old problems with new technologies on a daily basis. As a leader in judicial order, security and protection, United States Federal Court System provides a vast array of services and programs including; homeland security, contingency operations, infrastructure, intelligence, international development, logistics, training, and many other international and government based projects involving security support. Because of the sensitive nature of United States Federal Court System projects management relies increasingly on innovations in IT to provide fast efficient movement of information in extremely secured channels. This presents many challenges for the court system as upper management must have access to mission based information but needs to make sure that other areas of the court system doesn’t have access to sensitive information.

Currently the court system operates using sophisticated multi-key encryption software. However, the real problem has not been the securing of servers, but instead the ability of management to gain timely information from servers and teams located in other district or remote zones. In the United States Court System we take for granted the ability to be able to walk into a Starbucks and log onto the internet. In some district where there are court systems this is not an easy task. There are almost no high-speed broadband, most areas are limited to dial-up modems, and access is often unreliable. For this reasons, United States Federal Court System relies on some of the most sophisticated technologies such as satellite phones, cellular modems with encryption, and microwave radios. The problem with these technologies is twofold in that they are still slow and cannot give management real time updates in dangerous areas.
