Abstract

Everyone at one time or another has participated in a group. Part 1 of the following research paper is a literature review summary of Virtual Group and Face-to-face groups and the challenges and obstacles that they face. The research question has been asked: Is it possible for Virtual Groups to be seamlessly substituted for face-to-face group interaction in business organizations? Part 2 is a theoretical framework of the hypothesis. The dependent variable, group interactions, can be explained by which type of group is performing the interaction. The groups that will be examined are virtual and face-to-face groups. These types of groups are the independent variables. Some challenges that virtual groups have are trust, time delays, conflict, and leadership. Face-to-face groups also have some challenges as well, such as poor leadership, lack of focus, and misunderstandings within the groups. A schematic design has been included for the theoretical framework which includes the moderating variable of leadership. A scientific research design is included to show how research will be conducted, gathered, and researched.

One way companies help their employees communicate is by creating virtual groups. Managers can conveniently work with their groups because of this technology. This helps organizations save money, be more flexible and be more efficient. However, virtual groups operate differently than face to face groups which may be why research shows that virtual groups may not be as effective as face to face groups (Blaskovich, 2008).

The success of virtual groups depends on its member’s communication and the leadership that they have (Eom, 2009). One obstacle that virtual teams face is trust. This is because it takes longer to build relationships with their...
