The true history of karate is not certain but it has been told that a monk traveled through the Himalayas in the 5th or 6th century without weapons to defend him because his religion did not permit their use. He was forced to use his hands to defend himself against the unwelcoming natives and animals he encountered. After arriving in China he combined his new method of self defense with Yoga techniques that eventually evolved into Karate. This form of martial arts has been used for centuries to strengthen and develop the mind, body, and spirit by teaching mental and physical discipline that is necessary for a healthy adult life. People who have not mastered karate are not living to their fullest potential, they are missing out on the abundance of life, and are left to rely on weapons or others in the event that an attack occurs.

Karate has many physical benefits. It can improve a person’s balance, reflexes, and co-ordination to the highest degree. Karate can also counteract physical deterioration and keep the body younger for longer by toning all muscle groups including the most vital muscle, your heart. The exercises and techniques increase stamina to make people feel great and accomplish more throughout the day as well as help control weight to improve overall health. While the physical benefits are numerous and fundamental to living a healthy adult life the most widely understood benefit of karate is the ability to defend yourself and your loved ones.

Self-discipline is one of the most valuable mental benefits of Karate because it helps develop a person into who they have always wanted to be. Having the discipline to complete a fitness routine, achieve black belt status, and become a leader among peers aids a positive mind set. Karate also improves concentration, reduces stress, increases confidence, and boosts self-esteem.
