In the world of Gattaca genetic makeup is extremely important. The whole philosophy of this society values ones genetic ladder above any other factors. In every human interaction on a formal and institutionalised level genetic make up; is the factor that overrides and determines a person’s status in the so called ‘perfect’ society, and only in a secretive way that someone like Vincent who does not have a perfect genetic ladder overcome the set of rules or the system that the society has set.

One of the way in which the importance of genetic make up comes into importance is the official requirement to prove that one has been genetically engineered if a job of high status like being an astronaut is to be obtained. “Lamar: Congratulation, Vincent: What about the interview? Lamar: That was it.” This scene shows that genetic make up is everything in the society they live in, its just wether you’re a valid or invalid. The small and extensive examination of body fluids and excess body cells that the employees of Gattaca are subjected to, shows the massive focus on one’s bodily make up to the exclusion of any other personality characteristics such as determination involvement or perseverance. “Vincent: I got it. Jerome: Of course you got it”, this further more proves that Jerome knows that Vincent would get it anyways. The only way Vincent into the elite class of becoming an astronaut is to adapt Jerome Morrow’s identity.

Not only is the level of employment and salary determined by one’s genetic make up in Gattca but also ones social status is determine by one’s valid or invalid status. The only way this can be circumvented is when a person is lucky enough to come in contact with other small group of people who have some vested interest in people with compromised genetic make up and who therefore collaborate to succeed in a world which does not accept them for who they are. “Unfortunately my son isn’t all the promised, but then who knows what he could do.” Vincent...
