Telecommuting is the ability to work from home while using a computer (often company owned) to connect into the company network, to conduct daily task and work. While there are both benefits and problems with this type of technology, it seems to be a growing trend. This works very well for one that enjoys the comfort of home while working and saves corporations money on space and office supplies/furniture. One company that uses telecommuting – often called a flex job - is ACS, A Xerox Company. ACS offers flex jobs in the healthcare and hospitality industries (Staff, 2012).

Business Problem Statement

Security is always of concern when telecommuting. If the employee is using a company computer, lap top or tablet there is always the question of if that individual’s children, spouse, family or friends get on that computer. This puts confidential company information at risk. If the employee is using their own personal computer then there is the risk of hackers, viruses from personal files and corruption of files. It is also easier to ‘leak’ client information when using a personal computer. Other issues associated with those in the telecommuting world are: time management, lack of face-to-face interaction, and distractions in the home.

General Benefits It Will Provide the Organization

When a company like ACS offers a flex job, which will allow for fewer offices and buildings for the company to either rent or purchase. Overall saving the company money due to not having all the cost associated with the building and reducing the overhead. A company will normally see an increase in production and retention from telecommuting employees, due to the fact that the schedule is more flexible (About Telework, 2009). Typically a high morale rate of employees is a result of telecommuting also.
