MIS 2755 Internet Hardware Shopping Project

Due : October 24 at the beginning of class

The purpose of this project is to increase your Internet searching skills and gain additional knowledge on computer hardware. You will be comparing components offered by different vendors to find the best system for your available budget.

Your boss has given you a budget of $2,500 (not including tax or shipping costs) to purchase a new computer, monitor, and printer for your use at work. You are to gather information about capabilities available for various items of hardware desired on your computer with a price comparison between two Internet vendors. You are especially interested in capabilities of the monitor, internal processing, primary memory, secondary storage, and printer. (see procedures below)

For purposes of this assignment, we will not consider some factors such as compatibility with other computers in an office. You will receive the application software that you need for your job from the information technology department in the company, so software cost is not a concern.

Procedures

1. Use the Internet to locate two sources (2 different vendors) for the hardware items mentioned above (this can be combinations of more than 2 vendors, as long as at least 2 vendors' prices can be compared with the capabilities for each item to be purchased). You should be attempting to find the highest capabilities available, along with the cost required for these higher capabilities, while staying within your budget allocation.

2. For monitors, details that should be included are screen resolution or dot pitch, refresh rate, and viewable screen size.

3. For processing and primary memory capabilities, information should include RAM size, cache size, and processor speed.

4. For secondary storage you are interested in the amount of data that can be stored and the speed of the hard drive.
