Personal Values Development Paper

The saying that “Nowadays people know the price of everything and the value of nothing (Gallozzi, 2008)” is a statement that truly applies how people view and practice their personal values. This paper will explore what my personal values, how I established ground rules and my ethics development. I will further define what my values are, the sources that have helped to shape my values and the criteria I use and decision-making factors to improve them. Lastly I will discuss the possible impact of my values and performance in the workplace.

First, we must determine what the meaning of personal values is and how these values relate to our lives. A value is a belief, a philosophy or mission that is has a meaning and purpose or better stated a quality or principle that is important or valuable to you. The word personal means relating to, provided for one’s discretionary use (Dictionary.com, 2008) When we combine the words personal and values a phrase is created that is commonly known to people and consist of the traits and qualities that forms a persons beliefs. Personal values are what’s important to you and are things that will make you satisfied and happy about your life.

In trying to determine what my own personal values are I had to learn to separate what my societal, cultural and family values were and understand what values were important and beneficial to me. Values are what are considered to be right and wrong for the individual not their community, family or group they are part of. You must know as a person how you want to live and conduct your life. Depending upon your values this can determine the outcomes of your past, present and future. Once you have identified what you personal values are, this allows you to clarify and apply your values to have more enhanced self-awareness, make ethical decisions, greater leadership skills, become a team player, be more efficient, and prioritize our time and...
