Chapter 1 “Questions for Review”

1. What are the four functions that make up the management process? How are they related to one another?

They are: Planning and Decision making, Organizing, Controlling, and Leading. All four are basic functions used to determining course of action, coordinating activities and resources, monitoring and evaluating activities in a business.

2. What are the four basic activities that make up the management process? How are they related to one another?

They are: Setting the organizational goals and deciding how to best to achieve them, determining how best to group activities and resources, monitoring and correcting ongoing activities to facilitate goals attainment, motivating members of the organization to work in the best interest of the organization. Each activity stated is not independent of the other; they all are used in different order at times to achieve the goals of a company or business. They essentially are paramount in running and managing the success of the business together.

3. Identify several of the important skills that help managers succeed. Give an example of each.

These skills include: Technical skills to understand a specific kind of work done in an organization, an example of this would be trying to determine how to construct a home and developing a plan on what exactly is needed. Interpersonal skills to interact with people both inside and outside of an organization, this would be to coordinate the personnel and materials that are needed to build the house. Conceptual skills of a manager ability to think in the abstract (Overall workings of an organization and its environment, this would be where the home is actually being built and what zoning codes and figuring out what type of foundation is needed to build the home.
