Case 8.4 Old Smoke

Explain how you would handle this situation if you were Charles Renfold.

I would meet with Alice and Frank about them smoking in the office. In that meeting, mentioning the fact that employees are complaining about their smoking and that a solution is needed. Let Alice and Frank know they are just as valuable to the company, as are those who do not smoke. I would give them both the opportunity to provide some alternatives to smoking in areas where the non-smokers are also working. These alternatives are not to isolate them from the rest of the employees, but to let them know we need to be more considerate of others. Giving them acknowledgment of letting up the window, but the odor still lingers in the air and the company can’t afford low employee performance.

Even though Darlene has a legitimate complaint about the smoke, she still has a responsibility to get her tasks completed. Making it known that under no circumstances, no employee can chose not to finish their tasks, without consequences. The only immediate solution is to spray the room with an air freshner, but let her know she will need to do her job and get the information needed for the report. Keeping in mind the state law about a smoke-free work area, I would let her know that a solution to the smoke will be provided.

Describe the policy on smoking that you would recommend to Redwood Associates.

The policy I would recommend is that employees are only allowed to smoke on their breaks and outside. Let the employees know that the policy is being enforced to improve the air quality in the office. It is also in the best interest of the company not to allow smoking in the building; accidents can happen that could cost the company lots of money.

There are many companies that only allow smoking in designated areas, which is away from the building giving non-smokers the right to enjoy smoke-free air....
