Respond to the following based on the information in the “Suicide Rates by Age Group” article:
1. What has been the trend in suicide rates over the past few years?
Adolescent’s suicide has increased between 1970 and 2002. The peak for suicide was in 1994 at 13.8 per 100,000 (typical). The 2002 rate has declined to 9.9. Adult suicides for these periods are similar for ages 25 to 44 and 45 to 64. However, there has been a steady decline in both groups in recent years since the peak in the 1970’s an 80’s.
2. What part of the U.S. has the highest suicide rate?
The Western U.S. has the highest at 14.7 per every 1000,000 humans.
3. List three risk factors for suicide.
1. Access to firearms.
2. History of suicide attempt.
3. Being diagnosed with major depression, bipolar disorder, or a history of substance abuse.
4. Many researchers worry that suicide rates for adolescents and older adults continue to increase. What does the research data show about these age groups?
The data indicates that both older adult and adolescent groups have shown a steady decline since the 1980’s.
5. In the U.S., what demographic has the highest rate of suicide?
Caucasian older adult men had the highest rate for suicide compared to other demographics. Additionally, those 65 and older currently hold a higher rate of suicide compared to younger age groups.
6. List four possible reasons for the observed decrease in suicide rates.
1. Economic standing
2. Healthy life expectancy
3. Decline in substance abuse
4. Decline in homicide rates
7. Recent media reports have suggested that medications may provoke suicidal behavior, particularly in adolescents. As a precautionary step, the FDA issued a public health advisory warning doctors to watch patients closely for worsening depression when medication is first prescribed.
