Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the act of using someone’s thoughts or ideas and presents them as your own. This thoughts or ideas might be in the form of written work, a conversation or even a drawing and are accessible through the internet, books and media. This is a form of larceny and is punishable in the court of law since it falls under a category of intellectual theft. Although plagiarism has taken root in society, the most notorious areas where the vice is evident is among standard institutions.

One of the most common areas where plagiarism is widespread is in learning institutions since nowadays most information is easily accessible in the cyberspace. Many students prefer to copy work available in the internet only adding their names and claiming the work to be theirs. This plagiarized work when submitted to professors for assessment, leads to a student attaining undeserved marks for work that was not the students originally. Plagiarism in turn, breaks the contract between student and teacher, since the parties have failed in their duty (Anderson).

Plagiarism also takes place in the workplace, where a professional may choose to take work that is not theirs and use it in regards to their professional fields. It may be a thesis or a published article done by another professional and hence it is a copyright of the publisher and the law protects it from its use without the publisher’s consent (Karper).

Plagiarism may take place due to various factors that are synonymous in both schools and the workplace. Causes range from unreasonable deadlines to overworking of individuals or in some cases; it is simply laziness and incompetence.
