Ladies and Genlemen:

I am here to express concerns that are held by the City of Riverside. As citizens of this great city, we have the right to know whether our water contains higher levels of Sonox than what is considered a “safe” level and if our health is being put at risk. Are there toxins being released into our water supply? In order to address this situation appropriately, the mill will have to be shut down for an extensive period of time. This will be devastating for the citizens that are employed by Kardell Paper Co., but we can’t afford to put the health of the community at further risk. There has already been an unusually high rate of miscarriages and respiratory disease that may be related to the high levels of Sonox. If it is confirmed that illnesses are indeed linked to the Sonox, we move that the Kardell Co. be responsible for a monetary payment that will cover future medical bills that the families may incur since the company had been warned many times that the levels may be toxic. We also move that the Kardell Paper Co. refine their processes to ensure there are no further instances of pollution. Kardell will be required to work with the E.P.A. to determine if the Sonox has caused any environmental issues other than the water pollution. There will be required monthly testing on the Sonox levels of the water to ensure the safety of our citizens. We support the Kardell Paper Co. as an operation as they have brought much to our community but we need to focus on the needs and health of our citizens. Therefor we regret to say that if this issue is not brought under control or the Kardell Paper Co. does not comply with what has been set forth, we will have no option but to move on having the company close. We have to focus on all the citizens and what is the “ethical” thing to do.
