Information Systems

Information systems support business processes in an organization by allowing the collection of data. Once the data is stored, it can be process, analyzed, and disseminated to people who can then use the information to make informed decisions. These decisions allow the business to stay competitive in the ever changing market.

Computer-based information system use components item such as hardware, software, a network, databases, procedures, and people to provide support for the business processes. These components permit high speed and high volume processing of data and opens up fast, accurate communication within an organization. A good information system can allow for increased effectiveness and efficiency of people whether in the same office or located worldwide.

The business process of Enterprise resource planning (ERP) is used for operational review of the business. ERP brings together machine time, manpower, sales, cost, and material to generate plans for company resources. I work for a company in NE Columbia called FN Manufacturing; we manufacture military weapons. Our ERP system starts with the entry of a sales order, this provides the information of what weapon to make, the qty to make and when the customer wants the product.

After order entry, the production team can begin preparing and ordering materials to meet the required due date. The ERP system generates machine and build schedules. Once the system has the schedules are in place, the buyers issue purchase orders. The supplier is required to accept the order by signing and sending it back to us. Currently this is done by faxing, and sometimes by scanning and e-mail.

The buyers continue to communicate with the suppliers to ensure the timely delivery of product; this is performed by e-mail and telephone communications. When the product arrives, the required 2D bar code label is scanned into the system for receipt. This...
